   bdb (5.x) is provided by the vanilla Debian/Ubuntu package manager.

   If someone needs bdb4.8, they can use ./depends or ./contrib/install_db4.sh.

   I don't think we need a forth way to install bdb. Those ppa instructions only leads to confusion for debian users: Closes #3757

   utACK, good riddance, I don't think anyone was using these packages at all so it's bad form to recommend them

    Maybe. I don't think depending on a ppa (which has to be externally maintained) for build is a good idea, given all the alternatives, especially the install_db4.sh script.

    Indeed. Also, it doesn't work for debian. The "normal way" to install packages is through the vanilla package manger.
